Everything you need to know

Learn how Sonnet Money helps you plan your cash forward, invest surplus, and reach your financial goals.

What is operating cash?

Operating cash is the near-term money you set aside to cover your upcoming expenses. Sonnet Money looks ahead and calculates that minimum balance threshold so you can see what must stay before you move the rest.

When can I move my excess cash?

Set aside enough operating cash to cover your predictable expenses and any known one‑off or annual bills over the period you’re forecasting. As long as your projected balance stays above that operating‑cash buffer, whatever remains is safe to move into savings, investments, or extra debt payments.

Does Sonnet Money tell me where to invest?

No. It shows you when cash is safely available to move, not which investment to pick. You decide the actual investments based on your own strategy.

What happens with annual and one‑off expenses

Once you enter the dates and amounts, the planner shows when your projected balance would dip below your operating cash threshold (this is the minimum balance alert in cash tracker) . That gives you time to add more money to the account before the payment hits.

What's different versus traditional budgeting?

Instead of tracking every past spending category, you plan your future inflows and outflows, watch a clear operating‑cash line, and see exactly when excess cash is available under different scenarios. The focus shifts from backward‑looking control to forward‑looking timing, with less friction and much more clarity

Can I model a leave of absence or income change?

Yes. Sonnet Money is designed to handle that kind of “what if” change. You can set up a scenario that tweaks income, transfers, or major expenses, then see what happens to your runway, operating‑cash buffer, and how much cash is available to move on a single forecast.

What minimum balance alert should I start with?

Many start with the amount banks require to waive monthly fees (often about $1,000). Adjust upward if near‑term expenses are larger or more volatile.

How is operating cash different from an emergency fund?

Operating cash is the money you keep ready for regular bills and known big expenses you’ve planned for. Your emergency fund is a separate buffer for true surprises, like job loss or a medical shock, so you can put extra cash to work without weakening that safety net.
